New Army Barracks

WIRELESS SETS

The completion of the first block: of an improved type of barracks will be one of the outstanding events of British Army administra- tion this year. The new buildings will be the quarters of battalions of the Royal Tank Corps.

Situated in the neighbourhood of the terraced, hills of Battlesbuy and Scratchbury, and commanding the entrance to Warminster, these new barracką mark the start of the general rehousing of soldiers. A feature will be the provision of a degree of comfort never known before in the Army,

Amenities enjoyed by the soldier include slipper and today shower baths, and reception" and writing rooms with wireless sets.

SOLDIER-GARDENERS Soldiers quartered on Salisbury Plain have for the most part to provide their own entertainment. They have their cinemas and dancing halls which help to telleve the monotony of camp life.

Wireless in barracks is a welcome addition and is greatly appreciated when the day's work la done.

Near the barracks ample provis- jon is made for football, cricket. tennis and bockey.

The approach will be brightened,

possible advantage is to be taken of it.

The married soldier, especially, likes to devote some of his leisure to the cultivation of flowers. In: some of the most unpromising localities he has proved himself a successful amateur gardener.

The Dromotors of the Sandhurst type of barracks are to encourage soldiers to take an interest in gardening.

BAD HOUSING

The new barracks are not to be confined to the Royal Tank Corps or Salisbury Plain. There are other and older quarters in the country where the soldier has been badly housed for nearly 50 years. Barracks built during the Crimean War, wooden huts erected, at the time of the South African War and during the Great War are to be replaced by quarters more in accord with mod em needs. al

Old cavalry and artillery bàr- racks and some of the infantry barracks are being reconditioned, Stabling for horses is being con- verted into garages for tractors and transport vehicles. Extra ac- commodation for stores of all kinds is to be provided.

In the older garrison towns and camps many buildings have been condemned on sanitary grounds. Borden and Colchester, Woolwich and Aldershot are to benefit from the new building programme.

The paper, points out that the appointment of M.
