the Colonial Secretary's Office, and Mr. Jarman, Inspector of Police, made application for the apartment, and I selected the former, who possessed the advantages

Mr. Jarman of

knowledge of English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Malay, and an acquaintance, colloquially, with Chinese and Clerks.

He is a gentleman of active habits, and likely to be of much public utility in the situation in which he is now placed.

At the same time, as he cannot be expected to render service equal to those of Mr. Caldwell, with not much superior experience, I have determined to make a reduction in the salary of the Office, and Mr. Grond Pre has been appointed at £30 per annum.

The Quarters in the Central Police Station recently tenanted by Mr. Caldwell.

Mr. Caldwell was also Police Interpreter; I have not substituted Mr. Grond Pre for him in this post, but shall make arrangement by the inclusion of the year for the conduct of the post assessment.

Mr. Grond Pre has been nearly three years in the Service of the Colony.

I trust this measure will meet with Your Lordship's approval and confirmation.

I have the honor to be,

With the highest respect,

Your Lordship's

Most Obedient,

Humble Servant,

John Bowring
