BISHOP ROOTS GIVES MESSAGE TO CHINA FRIENDS

RETIRING AFTER OVER

FORTY YEARS' SERVICE

FIRST LANDED IN HANKOW

IN AUTUMN OF 1896

Hankow, April 21.

Bishop Logan H. Roots of the Hupeh-Hunan diocese of the American Episcopal Church, issued a message to his "China friendı.” giving bis reflections after over 40 years In China," on the eve of his departure on April 19. from here for America, where he will live in retirement,

} Bishop Roots, it may be recalled, came to China in 1896, exactly 42 years aro

.

His message, in part, reads as follows:-

"My Arst thoughts spring from an appreciation of China. When I landed in Hankow in the autumn of 1896, I asked some of my new Chinese friends what they thought of the war between China and Japan over Korea, which then occupied much attention in the foreign press. There were almost no Chinese newspapers in those days. They replied, "We don't think anything about that la the affair of the northern provinces and is no concern of ours.” I have seen the dormant national life of those days grow step by step, until today the port of the nation as a whole has become not only the focus about which political parties are formed, but it is also recognized as an effective reason for binding into a United Front all the patriotic forces of the nation.
