“WISDEN "

The New, Issne

John Wisden published the Arst edition of "Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack" in 1884, and until 1937 it continued to be published by the Arm of which he was the founder, each year increasing in size and au- thority. Last year the proprietors decided that it would be to the ad- vantage of the book and the coa- venience of the cricket publie gen- erally for it to be published by a trade house, so arrangements were made with J. Whitaker and Sons, Ltd.. publishers of the famous "Whitaker's Almanack," for its issue through them.

The new "Wisden" is published in two editions. The 55. edition 1s in a newly designed and strong Itmp linen cover (instead of the old paper one) and bears a wood; cut of an old-time cricketing scene | by Eric Ravilious The cloth, bind- ing, at 7s. 6d. net, has also been restyled, and will give more satis- factory wear,«

FIVE CRICKETERS..

The section containing the "Five Cricketers of the Year" (Goddard, | Hardstaff. Hutton. Parks and Paynter has been considerably extended, and is followed by the special articles.

"Here again "Wisden" is up-to- date. GO. Allen talks about "More Natural Wickets," the Hon. Mr. Justice Herbert V. Hendren on his re- tirement contributes some con- troversial and entertaining "Re- flections."

COMMISSION REPORT The Editor, in his "Notes," com- ments on the report of the Cricket Commission, the eight-ball over, the England captaincy, and the duration of Test Matches, giving his reasons for looking to the future with optimism. `

Again, "Wisden" has not over- looked the growth and Increasing appeal of women's cricket, 'more particularly the exchange of visits between England and Australis teams. So for the first time in the history of the book there is a special section dealing with Wo- men's Cricket, which includes a re- port and full scores of all England v Australia Test Matches played to- date. The Universities and Public Schools are dealt with in special sections, and "Cricket in the Em- pire" covers the tour of the 1936-37 M.C.C. team' in Australia as well as the tour of Canada in the an tumn of 1937.7
