"NO NEED FOR RENT RESTRICTION"
But Commission Warns
PRESIDENT LEBRUN TO
London, April 13.
Unscrupulous Landlords VISIT LONDON
Against Profiteering
.. --
Government's Close Watch: Will Not Hesitate To Act WARNING TO LANDLORDS to remember that in 1921 Government
was forced most unwillingly to impose rent restriction and that they or their predecessors found 3 a great burden, Was" contained"in" the report of the Commission to inquire into the rents question in long Koar, tabled in the Legislative Counell yesterday.
The Commission recommended, a public statement, that Govern- ment sees no reason at present to impose restriction but is careful- ly watching the situation and will not hesitate, should future cireumstances Justify such a measure, to pass legislation restricting increases in rent which induly benefit landlords.
"While we consider that landlords as a class have incurred much undeserved odium, we are well aware, that there may be unscra- pulous landlords who may take advantage of this report to indulge. in profiteering," declared the Commissioners.
Possible Solutions
•
STATUTORY RESTRICTION of rents and the inception of rapid- house construction work are the two possible solutions to the rising rents problem put forward by the Commission.
However it qualißes these suggestions by the statement that the statutory restriction of rents is an impracticable measure in present renditions and that rapid building, apart from its necessary slow consummation, is attended by many dinculties.
Main points from the report are: ven as high as, the level ruling. "We are satisfied by the figures before the depression. submitted to us, by the admission of tenants, and from our own en- quiries in the cases where both landlord and tenant appeared be- fore us, that there is no evidence that landlords as a whole are at present raising or notifying an in- tention to raise rents beyond, or

“MUMMY, may I have an Easter Egg," or "Mummy, will you
order lots and lots of hot cross bans this time"
These are the questions that are asked in almost every family about this time of the year. ́ Trade dépressions, international conficts, increased gas rates-they mean nothing to the "Junior members" of the community whose only worries are that they might not be "done well enough" by their seniors.
And when one sees all the nice things displayed in the local. shop windows, one can hardly blame the little shaps. The nice -- things that accompany Easter are tempting enough to make even the "senior members" look back, with a tinge of regret, on their childhood days-when they used to ask the same "ailly questions,” as they now so wisely call them.
THE BEST THING about this Easter promises to be the weather and that alone ought to compensate the "senior members" for any spending that they will have to do to satisfy the youngsters. First of all we will have the two day race meeting, but for those who are not inclined to "go to the horses" there are hun-!! dreds of other things to do.
The beaches, however, will probably prove most popular while there will be those who will take advantage of the four-day break from work" (this does not apply to the Gentlemen of the Press) and make the trip to Macao.
Cheung Chau will probably attract many holiday-makers too. and this Easter will provide a glorious opportunity to the many amateur photographers to "shoot" a few rolls of film.

Victims Of Slump
WEALTH OF EVIDENCE Was furnished to prove that owners of "house property were the victims of a disastrous slump during the years 1933 to 1937.
"No doubt there were during the last 10 years cases pi speru- lative building in which men of straw who hoped to make a quick boom profit were deservedly punished, and it is a fact that in the years 1933 to 1937 there was in the Colony what has been described to us as an overbuilt position, but the majority of property owners must be regarded as legitimate in vestors and bad it not been for the overbullt position the present acute shortage of accommodation would have been much accentuated.
