ANNUAL BOAT RACE TO

BE ROWED TODAY

Will Oxford Repeat Success Of Last Year?

"The annual boat race will be towed this afternoon and the burning question is whether Oxford will be able to repeat their success of last year whoo they beat Cambridge by three lengths to put a stop to the Light Blues' unbroken sequence of victories since 192L

Last year the Race over the famous course from Putney to Mort- lako took place in mid-week for the first time since 1921. The Dark Blues' time was 22 minutes 39 seconds and it was the fifth time in the last 50 years that 22 minutes had been exceeded. Oxford winning

ዝነ on every occasion.

To date Cambridge has had 4 wins and Oxford 41.

It is of more than passing interest to record that Oxford and Cambridge met in 1829 at Henley and rowed from Hambledon Lock to Henley Bridge, a distance of 2 mlles, Oxford winning easily in 14 mins. 30 secs. The next race was in 1836 from Westminster to Putney and the Light Blues won in 36 minutes. years the Henley Regatta was used for the race.

The firm regular annual boat race on the tideway was in 1858. In 1877 there was a dead-heat in the time of 24 mins. 64 secs.

POOR SPIRIT OF

-SPORTSMANSHIP

The thrilling sport provided at the Inter-School meet at Caroline Hill yesterday after- noon was somewhat marred by an incident during the high the which jump event, in victim was A King's College competitor.

St. Joseph's 'College entrant deservedly won this event with some splendid fumping and be, was given a close ran by the King's College boy.

"But this is what happened.

Each time the St. Joseph's competitor Jumped there was

Was 5000, silence, but this broken by boolpg and hooting by St. Joseph's College sup- porters as soon as the King's College competitor was about to jump.

It was most unfair. Enthusiasm at most times gets the better of spectators but when it is carried to such an extent as it was yesterday, it is not in keeping with the best traditions of sportsman- ship.
