NEW YORK SAYS Two-piece Flannel

VIOLETS

London,

New York fashions are becoming

a bigger and bigger influence on what

over smart women wear here. Latest news is that smart New York has gone violet-crazy.

Violet is the colour for spring sults, for afternoon dresses, and (often allled with primrose yellow) for romantic, Edwardian-looking evening gowns.

And of course, violets are the flower to wear. They sprout from the tops of quaint little straw hats; they are fastened to muffs; they are tucked into the corsages of off-the-shoulder Winterhalter dresses.

The sketch shows how fresh violets, deliciously scented, bring. ing a whiff of spring to, the ball- room, are used with one of these decorative Victorian gowns

The ordinary small, almost scentless violets are useless for carrying out this idea. You want the big blossoms about one and a half taches in diameter, called "Princess of Wales." These are in good season in London now.

I speak of the normal, the styles to simmer down to the normal because. In the spring. American women sten to all the admoni- tions on style and then promptly appear on the avenue in what has become almost à uniform, the strict "tailleur."

This year the most tailored suits have cascades of frills down the front, flower boutonnieres, tiny saucy sailors with veils tied snug- ly under the chin, massive sparkling jewels on the coat lapel, and hats, bars, shoes, and accessories in the brightest colours. are piquant and gay.

POPULAR PRINT DRESSES

Printed silks are

very popular this year, but the patterns are much more conservative and there are less of the olg splashy designs which were worn last season, and there are stripes of various kinds and descriptions, pin stripes, Ro man stripes in novelty colourings, stripes with multi-colour floral patterns. Dots have had a big revival this year. These are shown ir a casual afternoon type with white pique touches at the neck.

MOTHER AND DAUGHTER STYLES

B

Hats are so strangely divergent this year that I think they deserve 1 special mention. One salon has gone so far as to introduce Mother and Daughter millinery fashions. Mother and daughter wear identi- cal hats. Rather a quaint notion, but very effective and wholly charming when the hat is a navy sheer straw bonnet with a pink taffeta ruching edging the brim-- or a coloured plaid woven straw with a wide fluted"brim and trim- mings of tiny red love apples: at the base of the shallow crown.

Chin straps are worn on every conceivable type of hat, bonnets, rolled rims, sailors, pill boxes. Sailors, of course, are favourites for spring-and the most logical with your "tailleur." The up- ward trend in hair has brought on an upward movement in brims; a large off-the-face mlian straw has a roller brim with a truncated cone crown and is in a navy felt with the inevitable chin strap. All the fripperles of the early-part of this century are used. Flowers, velvet ribbons, humming birds, fand, here and there, a tiny ostrich feather. Draped turbans are ever popular at the beginning of any season.. There are some women who never wear any other kind of head covering. This year the colours are vivid and exciting. Chiffons are used in combinations of luscious colours: chartreuse and green with scarves to match.

BACK TO BLOUSES

Not in the last 20 years has there been such a complete return to blouses as there is this season. Frills and furbelows, tailored and taffetas, The gilet blouse with the exquisite hand-made detall and Val lade is popular with the strictly tailored sult.
