JAPANESE RAID WUCHOW

Bombs Dropped On Aerodrome

Canton, March 5.

The aerodrome at Wuchow, on the northern bank of the West River some 200 kilometres west of Canton, was bombed by Japanese airmen yesterday fore-noon.

A squadron of nine planes sud- denly appeared over the airbase and dropped numerous bombs which caused considerable damage, That the town itself was spared was merely due to the fact that the city was enveloped in a dense fog at the time of the raid,

The alarm was sounded in town only after the first bombs had al- ready been dropped over the aero- drome,

Reason of the delay was that the Chinese National Aviation Company was expecting the ar- rival of a commercial plane at the same time the raiders approached, and mistook the droning of the raiders' motors for a sign that the commercial plane was nearing the airport.

That the approaching planes were raiders was therefore not realised by the personnel of the aerodome before the Japanese air- men had released the first bombs.
