DEBATE IN

COMMONS

London, February 10.

Attention was called in the debate in the House of Commons last night to the growth in national and local expenditure when a motion was moved urging the Government to do everything in their power to lighten the burdens imposed upon all classes of taxpayers and ratepayers.

In moving the motion, Captain Balfour said that national ex- penditure in 1937 to 1938 was £251,000,000 more than in 1928 to 1929, in spite of a saving of about £140,900,000 on debt services," To meet this, direct taxation was standing at war time level. In policy only was to be found a way of altering drastically rela tion between revenue and expenditure.
