A demonstration of modern in- fantry equipment and its proposed tactical use was given near Alder- shot last month by the 1st Bat- talion, The South Staffordshire Regiment (Lieutenant-Colonel F. M. S. Gibson), states the "Times." A rifle battalion to-day is divid- ed into a headquarters company. which contains most of the spe- claiized equipment, and three' rtfis companies of four platoons each. A platoon consists of three sections of six men each and a platoon truck. This carries one anti-tank gun, two Bren light machine-guns with their ammunition, a bombing Bet. flares, and as much as pos- sible of the men's equipment. The truck is expected to keep up to its platoon as for as possible, and only at the last moment is the armament unloaded and there- after manhandled, a process called "rearming the platoon."

This rearming was shown, 88 also the new infantry equipment designed for maximum lightness. None of this equipment hangs be- low the waist; the bayonet is re- duced from 18in. to 8in.; and there are, two pouches to carry elther anti-tank or Bren ammunition. In the result the soldier carries 421b., "a reduction of 84lb. The Ideal aimed at is 351b., with which he will not be so seriously over- loaded when he rearms from the truck. The truck is fitted for anti- aircraft dring from two permanent mountings.
