Allowance Question Discussed
Marriage allowances in the Ser- vices have formed the subject of several questions recently, in the House of Commons, states the | Parliamentary correspondent of the United Services Review in the current issue of that publication.
Lieut.-Com, R. Fletcher (Nunea- ton) suggested the First Lord of the Admiralty should consult the Secretaries of State for War and Air with a view to reducing the age at which men qualided for mar- rlage allowance.
Mr. Duff Cooper replied that was a question of general policy. He was not prepared to say whether It would be wise to enter into con- sultation with other departments. There was laughter when Mr. W. Paling (Wentworth) asked:
"In view of the alarm in the country at the decrease in the birth-rate. will the First Lord get Into touch with the Minister of Health and hear what he has to say about it?"
In reply to a suggestion that marriage allowances should be in- creased, in view of the increased cost
of living. Mr. Cooper sald marriage allowance was paid on a sliding scale. the rate of allowances for the 12 months from April to March being determined annually by the cost of living index figure on the preceding January 1. The existing rate due to change, in the cost of living figure came to operation on April 1, 1931.
RATES OF ALLOWANCE As from October 1, 1936, however, the busic allowance for a wife only. for men on the 1925 scale of pay,
