Summary

the greater comfort and respectability of the residents became gradually apparent. In the latter part of the year 1854 and the commencement of the present year, the disorders on the neighbouring mainland gave a decided impetus to trade and caused a great influx, not only of population but capital to the Colony. Many of the new comers established houses of business, even opened, or at least developed, branches of trade; these were of a minor description such as Salt fish, Oil, &c.

It is certain, that although the disturbances which caused the influx have ceased, that no reflux has taken place. This steady increase is visible. The great and steady increase in trade has made the Colony a carrying trade centre.
