The Pope's Day
There is a melancholy Interest attached this year to the "Pope's Day," which is celebrated in Hong, -Kong to-morrow, because of the present Pope's insistence that his end is near. ·
41
In spite of the remarkable re- covery which His Holiness made from his illness last year, and in apite also of the denials of the rumours that his health is very bad, there is no denying the fact, nor is there any attempt to deny it, that the Pope is no longer the robust man that he was a years ago.
fcw
Now on every big public occasion he is accustomed to remark that
at
it is probably the last time that he will take part in it. When be gave the final audiences at his .summer residence
Castel Gandolfo he said this, and he re- peated it at the last Consistory which he held before Christmas for the creation of new Cardinals.
On the latter occasion, speaking to the Cardinals, he told them that in all probability before very long one of them would be called upon to take his place. Those who were present at that function remarked at the frail appearance of the Pope, a term that those who saw him in the past find it very hard to as .sociate with" him.
In connection with "the obser- vance of the "Pope's Day." there will be solemn High Mass in the Catholic Cathedral to-morrow morning at 8 a.m., and special prayers for the Pope will be offer- ed in all the churches. The church collections on this day form the traditional offering of "Peter's Fence" which is the gift to the Pope of the Catholics of the Vicariate.
THE CONVERSION OF ST PAUL In the course of the coming week, on Tuesday, there is cele- brated the feast that recalls the Conversion of St. Paul on the road 10 Damascus. Scholars debate .about the year of this event, but there seems to have been good au- thority for regarding last year: as the nineteen hundredth anniver- sary of it.
