TRIBUTE PAID TO SISTER

BEATRICE

A large gathering of parents, relatives, friends, and pupils, was present in the Hall of the French Convent School yesterday evening for the annual prize-day. Professor L. Forster distributed the cer- tificates and prizes. Among those present were Bishop H. Val- torta, Vicar Apostolic of Hong Kong, the Most Rev. Father E. M. Gillet, O. P., Superior-General of the Dominican Order, Rev. Father R. W. Gallagher and Sisters from other Missions in the Colony.

A steady year of good work was reported by the Headmistress, who said that excellent results were shown in most of the classes and progress generally was satisfactory. She paid warm tribute to Sister Beatrice, who, after 28 years of devoted work, left the School during the year.

..

Professor Forster stressed the importance of kindergarten schools, and urged for an increase in such institutions, properly equipped and staffed. He expressed the opinion that this would be a means of im- praving secondary schools and thus help in the ultimate attainment "of ideal of education.

Prior to the prize-giving cere- mony, a varied programme of songs, dances, music, and a play here offered by the pupils and this was received with well-deserved ap- plause. Mrs. Renald P. Ching ren- dered excellent accompaniment on the piano. In company with Miss P. Beck and Miss P. Montinola, respectively, she played two splen- did duets.

" INCREASED NUMBERS

The Rev. Mother Superior said: The year 1937 has been a year of steady work. with an increase in various activities and in num- bers. The highest number on the roll in 1937 was 452, 390 in 1936,

and a good average attendance has been maintained throughout" the year.

The annual inspection of the school took place on December 16 and 19, when Mr. Ralston, Inspec tor of English Schools, visited 'all the classes and reported favour- ably on the building, equipment, discipline, and general tion of the School.
