London, Jan. 15. Increasing use is being made of the screen in Army training. Instruction by Alms is largely employed for the objective training of troops in the use of weapons, transport, signalling, anti-gas de- tence, and ways and means of mechanisation

Among the subjects taught by moving pictures, accompanied by explanatory talks by an instructor, ure rifle shooting from various positions and the complete working of an automatic gun.

Drivers also are trained in the сите and operation of motor vehicles, salvage and unditching, and signallers are shown the cor- rect and incorrect methods of using the heliograph daylight lamp and telephone.

Demonstrations of the crossing of a river by a company of Infan- try teaches the use of the latest type of kapok bridging materials.

The Netherlands Government has decided the conversion, on January 27. of all outstanding four per cent. loans, namely, those of 1931, 1933. 1934 and 1938 rito a single 28-year loan to an amount of about 1,700,000,000 gulden.

CREDIT FACILITIES FOR FARMERS

London, Jan. 15. Consultations are proceeding be- tween the Ministry of Agriculture and the National Farmers' Union concerning the scheme suggested by the Union for providing short term credit facilities for farmers.

The report of the Farmers' Union says that only a broad outline of the scheme has yet been discussed and the question of securing Gov- ernment backing for the scheme, which is insisted upon by the Agri- cultural Mortgage Corporation as & condition of their co-operation, has not yet been dealt with in the discussions. The report adds, that It is hoped that if a short term scheme can be launched success fully, the way will be paved for enabling reduction of rates of in- terest on future long term loans to be secured. RAIDERS OVER CANTON

Canton, Jan. 15. The air raid alarm was sounded shortly after 7 o'clock this morning. followed a few minutes. later by the roar of three Japanese planes over the city, heading northward In the direction of the Hankow- Canton rallway. Anti-aircraft guns thundered into action, but no hits were scored.

This was the first time guns were audible in the city since the exciting raid ten days ago when. the schools at Salchuen were destroyed.

Eight planes were sighted at Tungkawan at 8.20 a.m. apparently heading for Canton, for 25 minutes later, guna, were again in action, but no details of the encounter are available, Several fragments. of shrapnel were picked up in the Tungshan district- Router.
