GOVERNOR'S REPLY
VOLUNTEER DINNER
(Continued from Pare 2.)
Hi Excellency, the Governor in reply said that he was glad to hear the, encouraging report of the year's work and wished to congra-' tulate Commander Petrie, On the subject of the possible development of the force which Cmdr: "Petrie had brought up he could mention that this matter had been brought to his notice sometime ago. He ̈· sympathised with the suggestion to the extent of communicating with the Hon. Cotimlastoner of Police, He understood that the Force re- quired development on several
Ines.
Continuing. His Excellency said The will is there and we are going to' and a way to expand the force as soon as possible, Both the .Ad- miral and the Commissioner of Po lice will be glad to hear this." IMPORTANCE OF FORCE Els Excellency said that he could cdngratulate the Force on obtain- ing Cmdr. Kingdon as officer In- spector and he wished him best of
luck.
•
There was a time when the volunteer force could be laughed at a time that he could remember, himself when they were not very efficient and perhaps they regard ed their work then as something "occupy their spare time more
than anything else.
"Your present 'Governor realises the importance of the Force and I should like to say that if there is anything. i the course of my Governorship that I can do to help the Force. I shall do it not only as your honorary Captain, which I am extremely proud of being, but also because I know that the volunteer force does form an es- sential part of the defences of the Colony," (Applause).
His
ADMIRAL CRABBE
Excellency Vice-Admiral Crabbe said he had only been a few weeks in the post of Com- mander-in-Chief of the China Station but he had learned auf- clent in that short time to know that the Force was a promising child of Els Majesty's Naval Ber- vice. In the worst typhoon in the History of the Colony the force had acquitted itself according to the best traditions of the Service in looking after HMS. Cornflower and he congratulated all concern- ed..
-
Vice-Admiral Crabbe proposed a toast to the HK.N.V.R. which was taken with enthusiasm.
THANKS RETURNED
In reply Hon. Cmdr. Shields sald
the encouraging remarks from "the top" were very encouraging for the Force. With all respect to the Government who footed their bills the Force always strove to merit the approval of its "guide coun- sellor and friend," the Senior Ber- vice.
"
Cmdr. Petrie, with the approval of the Force, dispatched a signal to the Admiral Bir Charles Little; "We are glad to hear of your satis- factory progress and hope for your continued recovery,”
ALARMIST REPORTS ABOUT HONG KONG
(Continued from Pare 1)
-Government Reply COLONIAL SECRETARY'S OFFICE, HONG KONG
12th January, 1938. Sir-I am directed by the Governor to acknowledge receipt of your letter of 8th January, 1938, relalivé to rumours- current abroad that perilous conditions prevail in Hong Kong. As your letter 'goes on to suggest, such. reports are baseless; - Doubtless they take their rise from the present hosülities between China and Japan. These, however impart no risk to per- sons or property in this Colony, | nor is there any sound reason to regard such a contingency as likely to occi
