JAPANESE EMPEROR INSULTED
Irish Girl Stabbed For Defiance
Because a young Irish girl insisted on her rights as a foreign cltzen to walk along a Settlement road in Shanghal, she was stabbed in the arm by a. Japanese bluejacket and branded as having "'n- aulted His Imperial Majesty. The Emperor of Japan! ****
The young girl in question, whose name is "Katherine Gilman. the daughter of Captain and Mrs. W. Gilman, has lost an arm as a result,
The incident took place in front of the Japanese Naval Landing Party Barracks in Hongkew, which is in the Settlement area. Miss. Gliman was on the point of passing the barracks, when she waE abruptly ordered off the sidewalk by an armed sentry, who insisted that she walk on the opposite side of the street. It was pointed out to the sentry, that' she was walking on a street, and sidewalk over which the Shanghai Municipal Council had control, and "that she was not bent on entering Japanese preraisès, but proposed to continue on her way. Thus snubbed, the service man drew his bayonet and threatened Miss Qilman with it
FOREIGNER RUSHES TO AID
འ་
From across the street, Mr. Eric Jordan, former, manager of the Palace Hotel and now, identifled with a large foreign brokerage con- cern in Shanghai, noted the incident and rushed to Miss Gilman's" side, urging her to do as the bluejacket demanded. The Irish girl. however, remained adamant. She declared that she had the right to walk on Settlement sidewalks and that, bealdes her parents were taxpayers. Her Irish blood coming to the for, Miss Gilman stub, bornly stood her ground.
Then, without warning, the Japanese bluejacket lunged at the r with his bayonet, burying the sharp blade in her arm. Blood gushed from, the wound, and the bluejacket turned to Jordan to threaten him, too. Jordan, realising the ugly mood the man was in, hailed a passing motor-car, and rushed Miss.Gilman to a hospital.
ARM AMPUTATED
•
During the next three weeks the wound did not greatly trouble' the girl,, and' seemed to be healing nicely, but complications later developed and gangrene sel in. Doctors of the General Hospital decided that, in order to save Miss Gilman's ie, the arin had to be removed. It was consequently amputated from the elbow.
Captain Gilman is at present visiting in Ireland, but Mrs, Gilmar 1s in Shanghai and has vigorously taken the matter up with the Shanghai Municipal Council and the Japanese authorities.
The latter have done nothing so far, and the reply they gave Mrs. Gilman was to the effect that the Japanese sentry was merely. protecting Japanese, property, When it was pointed out that Miss Gilman had not attempted to make off with Japanese property, the Japanese replied that she had been wounded, not for walking on. the sidewalk in front of the barracks, but for refusing to comply with the orders-of the bluejacket and for defying him, which was. tantamount to an insult directed at no less a personage than His Imperial Highness. The Emperor of Japan!
