With reference to the general subject of the proportion of sufferers from Venereal disease, after leave granted to ship's companies abroad, I may be excused for mentioning the following fact which came under my notice. In 1846 the whole ship's company of H.M's ship "Warspite" (after thirteen months confinement to the ship) were granted leave at Malta, where a frequent and regular examination of prostitutes is instituted. At least four hundred went on leave, and only four cases of venereal disease have afterwards put in the sick list, thus showing a percentage of less than 1 per cent out of ten cases of venereal disease, and that of a mild character, after being on leave.
