PATRONAL FESTIVAL

Patron Saint Day yesterday was marked by a special service at St. John's Cathedral. The sermon was preached by the chaplain, the Rev. H. W. Bairies, who said:

Let me wish this dear church and you her children many happy returns of the day." Dedication Festivals, like birthdays are occa- sions when arst we look back and recognise our parents and bene- factors. We have much cause to thank God for them in St. John's, who chose this central yet seclud- ed site and built upon it a church so full of quiet spacious dignity- seemly and serviceable; and those who have enriched it with gifts to express God's loveliness to eye and ear: and those who have adorned the doctrine of God our Savour by their ministry-whether Bishops Priests. Deacons, or laity, These have their true successors in our own day, as I gratefully know, who honour God and serve His children by generous gifts of time, money, ability, skill and service.

But let us hope we escape his fate for he has, suffered only second to Jesus Himself the softening of sentimental memory, Perhaps it because he lived to a great age and did hot meet with a violent end as martyr in his youth. But in fact St. John 19 most truly seen in the ambition
