Avoiding Fare On Underground

Samuel Harris, road, Golders Green, said to be the owner of a number of tobacco klosks and well-to-do, was convict- ed at the London Mansion House of travelling on the Underground with intent to cheat the London Fassenger Transport Board of part of his fare. He pleaded guilty.

"This can only be regarded as very bad case," said Mr. H. Ricketts, prosecuting. "Not only has the defendant cheated the Board over a period, but his crafty lies gave an immense "amount of trouble. Officials of the Board Investigated certain statements he made, only to find they were un-

Mr. Ricketts said that Harris travelled twice from Golders Green to the Bank without paying any fare. and as he passed the ticket collector he produced 2d, saying. "From the Angel.". His proper fare was öd.

When stopped he asserted that he had lost his ticket, and as he did not see why he should pay twice, he had offered 2d" to get past the collector.

A solicitor appearing for Harris confessed that It was Impossible to explain his conduct. He was not in want of money. It might be urged in mitigation that when he was at last found out he gave a correct address.
