CHAMBERLAIN ATTACKED FOR ARROGANT MILITANT ATTITUDE”

Tokyo, December 23,

"Deep regret" over the "excitement" shown by the Prime Minister, Mr. Chamberlain, in his state- ment on foreign affairs in the House of Commons on Tuesday is expressed in an editória? in the "Osaka Mainichi." Under the caption "Brtain Excited". the journal refers to the reply given by Mr. Chamber- lain to Mr. Attlee, Leader of the Opposition, who voiced strong criticism of Japan "for her complete disregard for International law."

The "Osaka Mainichi” takes particular exception to Mr. Chamberlain's 'statement that what- ever the origin of the war in the Far East "it certainly was a fact that there was no attempt made by Japan to seek settlement by peaceful means.”: The “Osaka Mainichi” says that Mr. Chamberlain thus reveals an "arrogant militant attitude as if Japan was entirely to blame. Such an attitude can hardly expedite a peaceful settlement of the conflict."

The "Kokumin" under the cap- tion "Britain Not Feared" · says, "We' can dismiss the idea that Bri- tain would challenge. this country, single handed. We are not con- cerned over any strengthening of the British naval strength to the Far East. Our concern has been aroused that Britain might induce the Soviet Union and the United States to swing into action in this part of the world”

The "Nicht Nichi" asserts that the genuine friendship with Japan, around which the future situation in China is turning, in- volves no infringement of foreign rights and interests in China, On the contrary, genuine friendship with Japan can alone bring new peace and order into China, per-

"Paris, Dec. 23. The purpose of his journey to Germany and his Impressions there are explained by former French Premier M. Flandin in the "Paris Soir"

The purpose of the journey was, he declared, to become at- quainted with the German point of view. Germany demanded return of her African Colonies. Lord Halifax had received precise explanations of the German point of view and the French Government had been informed about It in London.
