Big Crowd To Valley

Firefly Causes Upset In Last Race Of The Afternoon

Ideal weather, small dividends, big cash sweep prizes and good riding featured the last meeting of the 1937 season at Happy Valley yesterday Dividends were surprisingly small, up to the last event the highest sum paid for a win up till then being well under $20. Mr. 8. C. ang carried off the jockey honours by virtue of three wins and has ended the season by being champion jockey for 1937.

The only real upset of the day was in the last race, the Finale Handicap, when Firefly, brilliantly ploted by Mr. W. G. Poy, beat a field of eleven to pay backers $129.20.

Mr. B. L. Tao had a nasty shaking-up when he was dismounted from Australian Boy in the Lag- gards Handicap. In spite of this he rode a fine race on Emergency Call two events later to place second in the Dilatory Handicap.

The Daily Double-Commencement Bay and a Great Time-pald successful backers: $30.30.

HONG KONG AUTUMN SUB-)

LAGGARDS' HANDICAP

A well-contested affair, this event went to Ranger (Mr. D. Black after sustained spurt starting from just after the Black Rock. -Derby Day went off to a flying start and at one time Mr. S. L. Tao was unseated, and just afterwards Mr. Black took the lead and kept it: Mr: Tao received a shaking-up but was not otherwise hurt." TARDY HANDICAP

The first leg of the Dally Double found Commencement Bảy (Mr. 8. L Yuen) warmly backed, but it was until the Rock was well passed, and backers were just beginning to feel qualms of uneasiness,, that the pony looked like a winner. There- after it never looked back, the mar- gin being two lengths. Mr. Yuen indeed rode a fine race. Though

his backers may have thought he 309 cut it rather fine, his spurt was timed to a nicety. Mr. Ip did his best on Jungle Jim but was beaten by two lengths. A head separated Soldier of China (Mr. C. L. Gre- Kory). The time was 2.04.4.
