SPECIAL ROADS

FOR FAST CARS

Forecast By Mr. L.

Burgin

"The time may come when there is a need for the segregation of fast traffic from other traffic. In- dustrial traffic must come first. and pleasure traffic. if neces- sary, must be organised."

Mr. Leslie Burgin. Minister of Transport. "made this statement at the inaugural uncheon of the Commercial Motor Show at Earl's Court.

"If every one of the 4,000,000 people to whom we issue driving licences each year had a car five yards long. and they all took them out on the Brighton road on a fine Sunday the road from London to Brighton would be covered 228 times," he went on.

"The vehicles in this show in- clude six-wheelers 30ft long. The tremendous development of com- mercial road transport shows the virility. Importance, and the size of the industry-and some of the difficulties of the Ministry

of Transport.

"I went no industry which has reached such a tremendous size to keep precariously dependent solely on imported fuel. I.com- gratulate all who have shown leadership and initiative by using other fuel than petrol"

"As an owner-driver. who has covered 1,000 miles of road nearly every week of his life, with all the Instincts of care of one who wishes to answer questions the next day, I often and myself going over a blind bridge at speed and being confronted with an unlit, partly lit, or partly obscured lorry,' the size of a Moloch, on a narrow road.

"I sympathise with some of those young people who come to grief in similar circumstances. I realise that it is nothing but the interven- tion of Providence that has pre- vented it from happening to my owri car."

ANTI-GAS WORK

Systematic Training Going On. Says Air Minister

London, Dec, 13. During the debate in the House. of Lords on the Air Rald Precau- tlong Bill, the Air Minister, Vis- count Swinton, referring to anti- gas precaution work already ac- complished, said the school for in- struction in Gloucestershire had beën, turning out instructed per- sons at the rate of 120 monthly. A second school would shortly be established in the neighbourhood of York. Somne 200,000 volunteers had already been instructed in anti-gas measures. In addition, every policeman in the regular forces has also been trained, as well as very large numbers of special constabulary,

A special system of training had been instituted for doctors. and something like 10,000 doctors and 10,000 nurses had been instructed to give medical treatment in gas cases.

It was essential to prevent: any- thing in the nature of pante' in the work of giving security, and this he thought had been achieved.

Referring to provision of respira- tota, he said that in July last year an old cotton muil was taken over on the principle of a "shadow factory" for the making of gas masks. This factory had produced 20,000,000 gas maaks ör respirators, and he believed. Great Britain was the only country that had so dere- loped mass production of gas masks on such acale.
