BANKNOTES

Man Accused Of Stealing Them

The alleged theft of a collection of banknotes, claimed to be the finest in the world, led to a charge heard recently at West London Police-court.

Harold Jones, 33, a glass blower, who refused to give his address, was remanded in custody, charged with stealing between Sept. 21 and 22 from "an unoccupied house at Avonmore-road. West Kensington, 110 leather-bound volumes, con- talning 40,000 banknotes of various countries, valued together at £15,- 000.

The notes were the property of Mr. Frederick Ernest Catling.. a cinema proprietor. Jones was fur- ther charged with receiving them. CASE IN CLOÄKROOM Det.-Insp. Arthur Sands stuted that he

"When Jones was searched, an envelope addressed to a certain person was found in his jacket pocket. I showed it to Jones, and

he said: 'I am not going to say anything about him.'

"When I told him later that he would be charged with stealing and receiving the property, Jones said, 'If you let me see my wife I will show you where the collection is. It is on its own. There is no one with it.'

Mr. Gorospe who has just arriv-. ed in Manila trom a three-day in- spection of the mines stated that active development work is going on in the property. He said that more than 200 labourers are em ployed. Four additional bunk houses for labourers have also been completed, and a mine physician has been appointed to take care of the health and sanitary condi- tions in the mines.

Average assays taken from the various sections of the property in Sta. Cruz is 47.09 chromite. After the first shipment at the end of the month, the corporation ex- pects to double the production by the first month or next year.

Dr. Wilhelm Filchner, the famous German explorer and geographer, who

now 60. has reached Calcutta following the completion of his notable expedition through China, Mongolia, Turkestan and Little Tibet, says the "Statesman."

Though Dr. Flichner looks extra- ordinarily fit, and declares himself to be so, he is deeply perturbed at the results of a medical examina- tion he recently underwent while in Bombay. During the adventure from which he has just returned he encountered enormous diff- culties and endured such rigorous physical hardships that some of the legacies left by the mishaps of previous expeditions have begun once more to make their presence felt.

Doctors fear. for instance, that there may be an Internal rupture; thrown from a fractious camel two years ago in West Tsaidan in Mongolia, Dr. Filchner fell so that the back of his head came in violent contact with the ground, and to this accident is attributed persistent pains in the neck which now seriously interfere with sleep. Two large estates, one in Kent and the other in Lincolnshire, been injured; first in the War. together covering over 5.800 acres, recently changed hands. It is un- derstood that both have been acquired for lavestment purposes. In Knight Frank and Rutley's Hanover-square rooms Mr. Alred J. Burrows, of Alfred J. Burrows, Clements, Winch and Sons (Ash- ford and Cranbrook). obtained £40,100 under the hammer for the Hengherst Estate, Woodchurch. It runs to 2,522 acres. and com- prises the mansion, grounds and parklands. farms, small holdings, accommodation lands and pasture, two private residences and 20 cottages. Mr. B. M. Lowe (Heath- field) bought it on behalf of a client.

The Elkington Estate, Louth, Lincolnshire, which has been in the ownership of the Smyth family for centuries, has been sold by Vincent Harley and Co. (Kensing- ton Gardens-square) to Elkington Estates Ltd., a concern with re-

gistered offices at Grimsby. This 3,300-acre agricultural and sport ing estate, lying on the Lincolnshire

Wolds, takes in the parishes of North and South Elkington, Brack- enborough and Fotherby,

At their auction Knight, Frank and Rutley withdrew Shrubbs Hill Place, Sunningdale, with 40 acres, when bidding ceased at 28,400. A block of 284 acres of building land at Shepperton, zoned for 12 houses to the acre, was put back at €13.000.

In spite of what the doctors have told him, however, Dr. Fulchner. though worried, is unwilling to contemplate the prospect of having to abandon in the future the large- scale adventures for which he is poted in favour of less ambitious and less formidable undertakings.
