Many complaints which the lay man classes as "nerves" will be treated and studied at the new clinic, but its range will also cover those serious mental disorders which fall short of certifiable in- four full-time sanity. At least medical officers will work at the clinic, under the direction of Dr. R. D. Gillespie, Physician for Psycho- logical Medielene at Guy's.

here are now received only in spe- cial mental institutions. The vague stigma of insanity makes patients unwilling to enter these places and their relatives reluctant to send them there.
TYPICAL ILLNESSES "Many people who would benefit by psychological treatment, there- fore, never receive it until their illness becomes serious. But the provision of a psychiatric clinic within the walls of a general hos- pital like Guy's will enable such pa- tlents to be treated without feeling that they are in a "mental" insti- tution.
"From the teaching point of view Guy's will have the advantage of facilities for the study of psycho- logical medicine." Hitherto stu~ dents could gain this experience only by going from one mental hospital to another."
Among typical illnesess which would be treated at the clinic zaid Prof. Johnston, were:
"Obsessions In otherwise Bane people;
Nervous breakdowns in brain- workers and business men;
Psychological disturbances in adolescents; and
Incipient kleptomania, often moet with in schools and other institu- tions.
The new clinic will provide 42 beds for patients of moderate means, in addition to the six beds already available in the hospital for psychiatric cases.
