NANKING'S TRAGIC POSITION
POSITION MANSLAUGHTER VERDICT EXCITES WIDE
WIDE SYMPATHY
JAPAN WARNED OF DANGERS OF WAR ATTRITION
CHINESE CAPITAL NOW ONE
FORTIFICATION
LARGE
London, December 8; Nanking's tragid position excites the widest sympathy of many normally uninterested in the Far East who commiserate with the "poor Chinese." The effect of Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek's departure is much canvassed.
Admiration for the gallant Chinese efforts does not prevent the general feeling that China will get better terms for peace-making now than by prolonged resistance.
The Times" says that Chiang Kai-shek who is always a dour man is now desperate. It stresses the thousand difficultles and expenses for Japan in consolidating the occupied territory and her long-term prospects In China are not reassuring.
The Daily Mail expects that the fall of Nanking will bring a favourable opportunity for peace-making,
The "News Chronicle" warns against Japan being allowed to borrow abroad to finance her capital for the development of China.
Paris papers nervously canvass the results of a Japanese victory and some warn Japan of the dangers of war attrition-Reuter.
Nagking. December 8: The terrain and the defences set up by Chinese troops make the elty one large fortification. The existence of the so-called safety zone in such an area represents a contradic-. tion to the terms, for how can a fortress and a safety zone exist side by side?
Japanese military authorities, however, do not wish intentionally to draw foreign lives and pro- perty as well as those of Chinese non-combatants into the ravages of war. Thus they find themselves. for the above. reasons, unable to extend any assurance or guarantee regarding the safety zone. Persons who evacuate to the safety zone” do so at their own risk and the Japanese authorities cannot be held responsible.-Reufer.
