The present number of Chinese Students is 30, and this has always been the number. Their average ages vary from 9 to 12 years. The eldest boy has been in the school from the commencement, but in general, it is found that the Students leave as soon as their knowledge of English is sufficient to secure them profitable employment elsewhere.
The Students are chiefly children of tradespeople, mechanics, and small farmers.
One half of the day is occupied in the study of Chinese; one half in the study of English books. The students meet in the Chapel for prayers morning and evening, and are taught to chant and sing the psalms and hymns used in Church service.
The Books used are the Bible, the smaller arithmetic published by the Irish National Education Board, the Geography (lowest series) published by the Christian Knowledge Society, a small history of England by the same society, Osterwald's Bible History, and Allan and Cornwall's Grammar.
