Hongkong 18th September 1856

We have had the honour to receive your Excellency's instructions, contained in letters No 8 dated 19th April last; on the subject of

St Paul's College at this Place.

It is therein stated, that Her Majesty's Government, being intimately anxious to promote the study of

the Chinese language by British subjects, and conceiving that such an establishment as this College, if taken advantage of in conformity with the conditions on which $1200 Dollars are annually dispensed for its support, might prove highly useful
