TO-MORROW
Bowls-Kowloon Bowling Green Club Closing Day and Presentation of Prizes 2, p.m. Cricket-First
Cricket on Saturday composed | solely of friendly games generally was featureless. Kowloon Cricket Club suffered another defeat but this time could hardly be blamed for losing, as they were without Donald Anderson, Teddy Fincher, Frank Goodwin and Robbie Lee, or In short, their two best bats and bowlers. Actually the Mainlanders did not do so badly. They batted | PM. first and made 152 for four wic- kets, at which point the closure was applied. A. T. Lay hit hard for his 61, which included a six and nine boundaries. » W. L. Mc- Kenzie and young Kenneth Baxter gave him valuable assistance. G. F. O'Bryen, the new "And.” was tried as an opening bat, but fall- ed, being caught for a "duck." 1 don't know exactly at what time the Kowloonites declared but un- less it was very late they took a chance, for the Army, like the Sentor Service, are a team whose batting moods cannot be reckon- cd with. They are llable, for no particular reason, to get out cheap- ly; on the other hand when set to make runs in a hurry, one or two of their men frequently come on: So it was in this game. Leuten- ant Weedon struck form at once, and with Sergeant Partridge add- ed 61 runs for the second wicket in a bright partnership, and the runs were knocked of, also for four wickets, with a little time to spare. Weedon made 70, a really fine and free knock, and Partridge was undefeated at the end with 43.
•
With every man of the seven who batted running into double figures, the Royal Navy were able to declare at 181 for six wickets against Craigengawer. Captain Carless was top scorer with 46 and
· Lieutenant Shelton had 36 but the best innings. I am told, was Cap- tain Whitmarsh's comparatively brief 18. Craigengower fielded a depleted side and their bowlers! hardly troubled the Naval bats- men.
George Souza was back in the team but he had an off-day, giving away 60 runs in eight overs, and taking only one wicket, Cralgengower were early in trouble when they went in and lost four wickets for only 28 runs. Then A. R. H. Esmail, who is really a bet ter bat than most people think, and C. W. Lam became associated for some time and they managed to play out time. Esmall had 29 before being bowled by Lt. Crd. Pugh, an unusual way for him of getting out. If Esmall will con centrate more on attaining a good drive and leave out trying to cut every other ball or so he would be- come quite a dangerous bat. There is little wrong with his eye and he can reach out to the pitch of the ball well enough but at present he seems to regard playing forward solely as a defensive stroke, and, having got to the pitch of the ball, smothers it instead of forcing it past mid-off.
