MASS MURDER

OF CANTON. CIVILIANS

(Continued from Page 1.

across the river told us that the This rald was apparently still on. was amazing since it was now 11.30 a.m. and over an hour and a half since their Arst appearance.

A few minutes later a group of four machines flying in pairs, again at a great height, appeared flying in an easterly direction. We dis- tinctly heard the explosion of more

bombs and then the machines were out of sight and did not return, al- though the all clear signal was not given until over an hour later.

I learnt afterwards that the ob- jectives of the raiders were the Canton-Kowloon Rallway and the Canton-Hankow Railway, both of which were slightly damaged. At the Canton Kowloon Railway Station two people were killed and two injured.

What struck me most in connec- tion with the raid was the absence of even the slightest sign of panic among the populace. Police and military were about in all direc- tions advising all pedestrians to seek cover. The streets were thus. for the most part deserted, all traffic, too, having ceased. All over the city the entrances to most big 'buildings are strongly sand-bagged, AS 3 precaution against flying shrapnel. The calmness with which the police and soldiers conducted themselves and rendered assistance while death was raining from the skles in close proximity was 'amaz- ing.

NO FOREIGNERS ABOUT

I could not help noticing that my colleague and I were the only two foreigners abroad during the raid. It is customary. I am told, for all foreigners to seck the comparative security of Shameen during these air raids, although it is well within the bounds of possibility especially on such a day as this with an over- cast sky and extremely poor visi- bility that bombs may even drop in the concessions. At any rate the conditions were such that I per- sonally did not feel very much more unsate at the New Asia Hotel in the Chinese city.

Lovers of Chinese art will, be glad to have the opportunity of attending the exhibition of Chin-ins. ese and European paintings by some ninety-two Chinese artists.

This exhibition is unique in so far as it is a collection of the works of largest number of the modern Chinese painters, artists and scholara yet to be seen in Hong Kong, and the array of mo- dern talent, consisting of over three hundred exhibits, was re- cently collected from various cities in China. This fact alone should arouse local interest in the ex- hibition, as it will give Hong Kong modern people an insight into Chinese approach to art and mo- dern Chinese artistic expression.

Just, as the London Chinese Ex- hibition a few years back revealed "to people in England the delicacy of Chinese art, so this collection of the works of nearly a hundred artists will reveal to lovers of art Mr. Tüman has not been on here the character and quality of any of the major Everest exped-artistic expression of Young China, tlons, but he took part in the re- connaisance in 1935,
