Overseas Prize
No fewer than 7,000 battles of beer were adjudicated upon in the Bottled Beer Competition by judges who are some of the foremost authorities in England.
For the first time Empire beers were entered in the competition, Brd entries were received from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Kenya.
The judges found themselves unable to arrive at an adequate gomparison between. home and overseas brews, as the Dominion beers were entirely of the lager type, and home entries in this class were very few.
The first prize for overseas beers went to Canada for a brew pro- duced by the Riedle Brewery. The Dunedin (New Zealand) Brewery Co. was first in the light lager' class.

During the early days of British colonisation in India it was found that beer sent out from this country went sour before arrival. An expert brewer was called in to experiment with view

BESTIAL KILLING BY JAPANESE
Chinese Sergeant Captures Japanese Tank But Loses Life
Gallantry of the highest order is attributed to a Chinese army sergeant who captured a Japanese tank almost single-handed, and drove it into the enemy lines to meet certain death..
1
It was at the time the Chinese troops. were evacuating from Chapel. The sergeant, Chen Li- jin, was secreted in A semi- demolished building in that area with 18 other soldiers, when Japanese tank lumbered into view, its machine-guns spitting death. Suddenly it came to a halt at the very edge of a tank trap. and several perspiring Japanese emerg- ed to determine the next course to pursue.
Sergeant Chen, who possessed a knowledge of tanks, then decided on a daring move. Leading his small band of followers, he at- tempted to capture the tank, hoping to escape with the vehicle before the Japariese recovered from their surprise.
THE CHARGE win rines. pistols and two machine-guns keeping up a steady fire, the Chinese rushed the tank. At twenty yards nine of Sergeant Chen's men were shot down and five more met with a similar fate, before they had gained another ten yards. Bergeant Chen and another soldier managed to reach the tank, however, and to. the consternation or the
Japanese.
drove it away. under their very notes. They headed the tank, in
the immediate vicinity. Suddenly. a Japanese tank; appeared. Jap- anese soldiers were wildly firing at it and we were amazed to see the tank firing back. Near Jukong Road the tank halted, apparently stalled, Japanese machine-guns poured a deadly hall of bullets at the tank. and several Japanese soldiers were killed trying to force. an entrance to the vehicle. One soldier threw 2 grenade which struck the front of the tank. but' did little damage.
This was followed by a rain of grenades, but the men within con- tinued to fire. Then from 110- where, seemingly, 2 Japanese
trench mortar was brought into play. Hammered by grenades and shells, the tank did not long sur- vive. The Aring from the tank ceased altogether. The Japanese were cautious, but eventually' ap- proached the tank on all sides. I have heard many tales of Japanese atrocities, but the scene we wit nessed following the silencing of the guns was something I shall always remember with horror.
BESTIAL KILLING
"We saw the Japanese drag two blood-covered Chinese" from the tank Both men were at alive. The Japanese, riddled their bodies with bullets and time after time as the inert "forms" lay on the street, gleaming Japanese bayonets were driven into their bodies. Savage kicks were administered.
