A state of emergency- And Hollywood's biggest and brightest stars and executives could throw down
their movie work and turn out 3 bang-up newspaper before you could yell "Extra!"
And it wouldn't be any novelty newspaper, either. It wouldn't le around in souvenir packages. The by-line names on such a newspa- per would boost its circulation overnight to International figures. An incredible number of the movie great once upon a time were newspaper men and women. Mention the name of Nelson Eddy, and millions of people all over the world think of a hand- some and romantic singer. But if the emergency call should go cut you'd find Eddy on the copy desk in the briefest of twinklings, filling the kind of job he held on Philadelphia papers long before he ever thought of Hollywood.
A CITY EDITOR
If you need a smart managing editor you'd probably pick Nua- nally Johnson, one of America's most brilliant journalistic figures, now a writer-producer.
Mike Fessler, writer-producer, whose latest production is The Women Men Marry, for Metro- Goldwyn-Mayer, would leap back into harness as a city editor., a post he filled with great capability
on several newspapers.
For editorials, you would and Sidney Blackmer tilted back in his swivel chair-just as he was a de- cade ago on the staff of news- papers.
For columnists--well, the Holly- wood woods are full of columnists. Probably Walter Winchell would be your man.

JOAN CRAWFORD PREPARES FOR A
PICTURE
It is harder work preparing for a picture than making one.".
Authority for this statement is Joan Crawford, who recently was enjoying a vacation before starting her new starring picture
"At least it was a vacation in theory," Joan smiled, when dis- covered in Adrian's studio, looking over the sketches for the twenty- eight ultra-smart style creations she will wear in the film.
"Having three or four weeks' rest between productions is a pleasant prospect," she continued, "but it never works out that way. I have had one week in which to relax since finishing my last picture. From now on, my time will be taken up with costume fittings, selecting coiffures, make-up tests, going ever

THE STARS ARE
ONLY HUMAN
The stars of Hollywood are by no means helpless.
..
In spite of the fact that there are many people to do things for them. there is always a time when little odd jobs present themselves. and when a player enjoys very much tackling the problem alone.
But like all other humans, there is always one thing that seems impossible, one hurdle that proves a problem. ·
Take the case of Warren Wil- lam, for example.
William is Hollywood's finest in- ventor. He can manufacture amaz- ing gadgets out of old chunks of metal and a length of rubber hose. But when it comes to building a
fire." William is "out." Time after
time he has tackled this job, and time after time the blaze flares, then simmers out.
Nails prove Robert Montgomery's Waterloo. This Metro-Goldwyn- Mayer star can't drive a nali straight under any circumstances.
Nalls, but finger-nalls this time. prove a problem to Virginia Bruce. She has never been able to give herself a satisfactory manicure.
BETTY AND OMELETTES Although Betty Furness would enjoy nothing more than "going into the kitchen and whipping up an omelette, she has had nothing but failures in this direction, n spite of the fact that she is really a good cook.
Considerable study and thought
is necessary to do this," she declar- ed. "I first read the script several times. until I am familiar with every angle of the plot, and not enly my own part, but the parts of other players. To really play a role convincingly, it is essential to have a feeling of actually living the life of the person portrayed."
Joan and Franchot Tone often work on a script together, taking important scenes and playing them on the stage of their "little thea- tre" at home. ..
This helps." said Joan. "in work- ing out mannerisms and actions for a characterization."
The day before a picture starts 13 the most difficult. according to the star.
"I am usually too nervous to eat or sleep." she said. "Most ac- tors go through this. Once the plc- ture begins, I feel better."
Joan approved Adrian's sketches and walked out to her car to go home.
"I'll be back to-morrow." she salg, "for my first atting, and the vacation will be over."
