The Ranilles is the ship in which lower deck candidates for commissioned rank are to receive special training under the revised scheme recently announced, and Instructor-Commander F. C. Sobey, B.A... has been appointed 10 her for duty with these candi- dates. During the past two years he has been an instructor in navi- gation at the R.N. College, Green- wich. Previously he had served in several ships of the Fleet, includ- ing the Nelson. Home Fleet flag- ship.

It has been decided as an ex- perimental measure
the next six months that all soldiers of good character and at least six years service who have not had a chance of being trained in a trade during their Army service shall being have the opportunity of trained during the last six months of their service on Army rates of pay.
This training will be given partly at Army vocational training cen- tres at Aldershot, Chiseldon, and Hounslow and also" at Government training centres at Southampton, Handsworth (Birmingham), Slough. Worldon (Croydon). and Leeds. During the next six months it is hoped to pass 6,000 men through the centres, compared with 3,000 normally trained in a full year at Army centres.

It has been decided to introduce a badge for air observers, to be known as the "observer's badge," the design of which will follow that of the badge of air observers in the R.A.F. during the War
Particulars as to the availability of the badge will be announced later, but it is to be issued and Worn under the same general con- ditions as apply to the pilot's flying badge. Air oficers com- manding will for the present authorize the wearing of the badge when an airman has passed the air observers' course has served in a squadron for at least six months, has completed at least 50 hours' flying as air observer, and has been recommended.. by his C.O.

The funeral took place at the Protestant Cemetery yesterday of Mr. Frank Jackson, former em- ployee of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Hotels, who died at the age of 50 at the Kowloon Hospital on Tuesday. The Rev. D. Rosent- hall of the Christ Church, Kow- loon Tong, officiated at the grave- side..

BANISHEE'S LONG LIST OF CONVICTIONS
Despite the fact that his period of banishment was for life, Wong Ming, 47, returned to the Colony on Tuesday and at once went to a drapers' shop in Wing Hat Street where he attempted to lift a roll. of cloth. He was detected, how- ever, and appeared before Mr. R. Edwards at the Central Magistracy yesterday, where it was revealed that previous to his being sent away in 1931, he had a long. Hat of convictions. Sentence of one year's hard labour was imposed. Inspector. R. Shannon prosecuted.
Another banishee, who was sent away for ten years in 1934, was given six months' hard labour,
