"I-learned with deep regret of the untimely death of Pembroke Hon. Mr. N. L. Smith Stephens, who laid down his life. R. Andrewes

for the cause of truth and justice and in the service of enlightened journalism.

"For the past months I have read with admiration his able des- patches from Shanghai, which were obviously written with un- daunted courage and at great per- sonal risk.

"It is the feeling, of my fellow- countrymen that his death is not only a loss to his own profession but has deprived"China of a friend and impartial observer.

"I wish to offer you and Mr. Stephens' family my sincere sym pathy and condolences."-Reuter.
