EXPORT OF ARMS TO JAPAN.
ta
London, Nov. 8. Asked in the House of Commons to-day if any munitions at the present were being exported from Britain to Japan, Major the Bon. Oliver Stanley said:
"As I have previously explained, the British Government considers It contrary to public interest, to publish particulars of licences issu- ed for the export of arms and ammunition to particular destina- tions. I may, however, add that from July 1 to September 30 last, the value of exports from the United Kingdom to Japan of arms, ammunition, military and naval stores was £14,812;" -Rester.

The return includes the ployees of the railway companies, the London Passenger Transport Board's railway undertakings, and the Railway Clearing House, and relates to the week ended March 13, the comparative figures for 1936 being for the week ended March 7 in that year. The total for all grades of salary and wage- earning staff for 1937 amounts to -599 652, of which total 24.613 were females.
Last year's grand total was 585.811, including 23.468 female staff, the increase in the twelve months amounting, therefore, to about 2 per cent. The 1937 total is not a record, even in the last ten years. 677,148 having been reported in 1928 but it is the highest guze since 1931...

The recent record of Egypt has been no exception to that of other States in the improvement and slow trade recovery experienced: but 1935-36 was made memorable King Fuad and the accession of for the country by the death of 6th November, 1987,
his son Farouk, and by the signa ture of the Treaty of Alliance with Great Britain. which, as H.E. Ab- boud Pasha reminded his audience, put his country on a footing of international Independence. From the commercial standpoint the outstanding feature of the Treaty concluded is the disappearance of the Capitulations.
