Lord Nuffield, who confessed that he had not the fogglest notion" of the extent of his gifts to charity.

Sir Edward Crowe retired from the office of Comptroller-General | except that they totalled more of the Department of Overseas Trade recently.

Mr. R. B. Dunwoody, secretary of the Association

British of Chambers of Commerce, wrote to Sir Edward Crowe on September 18. expressing the regret with which the members of the execu- tive council of the association had heard of his intended retirement. The letter continued: "They re- call the many valuable services which you have rendered to Bri- tish trade, not only in the Far East but in the department from which you are now retiring, and they desire me to convey to you the very best thanks of this asso- clation and to its affiliated cham- bers in their efforts to promote British trade."

In a letter of thanks, Sir Ed- word-Crowe-saldi-"During-the- whole of my service abroad, and later on in the Department of Overseas Trade. I have received nothing but kindness and help from the members of your asso- clation and from individual chambers of commerce. It has been of the greatest benefit to me to be able to rely on the valuable advice so readily given, and "trust that you will be good enough to continue to extend to my suc- cessor. Mr. T. He was discussing the announce- ment of his latest benefaction, his £1,000,000 gift to Oxford Univérsi- ty for the creation of a new college and the endowment of Fellowships.

"The idea that, giving away money is an easy thing is the big- gest fallacy," said Lord Nuffield. worries "My responsibilities and have increased 500 per cent, over my business worries.”

Explaining the reasons. announcement that he could not consider any further benefactions at present, he added:

"The worry from giving is too great: it passes all understanding. One can do so much harm by giving money away in the wrong direction.

WORLD-WIDE REQUESTS

"After

the announcement of any gift, I am written to from all over the world. The requests for money come from individuals and organisations alike. I have had letters from Central Africa and from the East, many of them obvi- ously, written by professional let-

ter-writers.

"When you have made a gift, you are the man to be shot at by every- body who thinks he would like some money. People with stacks

gins at 8.30 1× the morning, but i cannot get my own letters until 11.

"I never answer a letter from my own private address, and I never open a letter at home unless I ́re- cognise the handwriting. For the past 12 months, I have been gel- ting an average of 200 letters a day, nearly all of them asking for money.

"I make a point of rejecting these inopportune applications. Frankly. I am rather short with people who stop me in the street. I have been stopped many times by people who should know better. "For these reasons I must em- phasise that from now onwards I cannot acknowledge these requests, or answer correspondence which my present gift may provoke."

Lord Nuffield explained the mo- tives which prompt his generosity. "I just feel that it is up to anyone who has more than he requires to help those who are less fortunate,"

He said.

"In particular, I like to help those health is not such as I myself possess.
