NEW SIGNAL

FOR THE NAVY

£350,000 Scheme At Portsmouth

The

Admiralty have acquired

from the Portsmouth Corporation u site at Stamshaw, in the north-

ern part of the city, on which to erect a

new signal school at a cost of £350,000. Notice to quit is to be served next week upon some 400 allotment-holders who at pre- sent occupy the land..

For some years past the Signal School has been in Portsmouth Royal Naval Barracks, where the accommodation is inadequate for the needs of the school, which is the principal establishment for training officers and men of the Royal Navy in signals and wire- less telegraphy. As a consequence of the expansion now taking place within the Service the

slenal schools at Chatham and Devon- port which operated during War have peen reopened, but they are only subsidiaries of the mouth school, which is a captain's command and employs a large staff of experts, both naval and

civilian.

Ports-

Its name only partly indicates the nature of the work for which the school is responsible. This falls into two departments, one instructional, the Navy with its signal experts; the latter furnishes them with the sclentine apparatus they use and, incidentally, does Kuch to help the mercantile marine.
