Young Gentlemen being sent out from Home to become eventually useful Interpreters to the Colony and whose Salaries should be raised in accordance with their progress in the Chinese languages of the Provinces of Kwangtung and Fokien principally

principally, as well

as

that of the Mandarin, the latter is likewise required than the two former,

but

viewing this Colony as I do, in

a gradually improving state, I anticipate greater intercourse

with the Mandarins than we now hold and with whom at

present no Correspondence is maintained by Europeans only, Chinese being used.
