ITS POISE
SHARP RISE AFTER SLUMP
il
NEW YORK, OCT. 20. WALL STREET TO-DAY TOUGHED THE OTHER EXTREME AFTER YESTERDAY'S SLUMP AND CLOSED VERY STRONGLY. GAINS IN SECURITIES AND BRITISH INTEREST RANGED FROM ANYTHING UP TO TEN DOLLARS. ALL GROUPS PAR- TICIPATING IN THE ADVANCE THE CONSENSUS OF OPINION IS THAT THE MARKET HAS NOW REGAINED ITS POISE.
་
Brokers and other investment sources were flooded with in- quiries regarding possible, purchases and it is apparent that even the mari in the street realised that some of the knockdown prices prevailing have been more than discounted by the very pessimistic opinions regarding the general business outlook.
Prices to-day rose one to four, or more points, some of the prominent issues rising as much as five to eight points. Trading. while not so heavy as yesterday. totalled 4340,000 shares.-- Reuter

In op n the new building of the Federal Reserve Board, Pre- sident Roosevelt urged that the Government must improve its co- ordinate cred't and other. mu- chinery to achieve and maintain an enduring prosperity, free from the disastrous extremes of booms and depressions.

Cotton fabric is used to reinforce ordinary bituminous road surfac- ing material. The fabric is laid down Arst, the oil, containing 55 per cent of asphalt, laid over it and sand spread un top. When the mixing process is complete the surface is only about a quarter of an inch thick, but it can stand the friction of heavy traffic without being worn off. It is stated by engineers that the experimental cotton roads built in New Jersey some three years ago are still in condition without any perfect work whatever being done on them during the whole period.
Here, then, is another shock for Housto the rubber Industry, which for so long has been hoping that rub- ter roads would become general.

MESSAGE RECEIPTS
An index number will be issued in time for publication on the 20th of each month, and as the course of these traffic receipts has always afforded a valuable indication of world trading and com- mercial activity, it is hoped that, in addition to providing an in- dication of the Company's trame for its stockholders, it will be found of value to observers of world economic conditions.
INDEX NUMBERS
These index numbers represent the estimated monthly receipts from trame as related to comparable traffic in the year 1920. It should be noted that since 1929 the operation in various overseas areas has been taken over at different dates by the local associated companies, and the total figures for 1929 taken for purpose of com- parison in establishing the index 100 have therefore been adjusted when necessary by the omission of the receipts accruing in the areas affected. The Index numbers are. In consequence, all shown upon a comparable basis
