HARRISONS AND CROSFIELD
Harrisons and Crosfield, who, in addition to being Eastern mer- chants are probably the largest managing agents of rubber and tea companies, have increased their profits substantially, states a Home correspondent. The net profit for the year ended June 30 was £129,- 014 compared with £271,842 In the previous year. The final dividend on the Deferred stock in increased to 20 p.c.. compared with 15 p.c. in the previous three years. This makes a total distribution for the year of 25 p.c.. against 20 p..
The improvement in the com- pany's result is greater than is indicated by the figures. The net profit is arrived at after providing not only for the bad debts, depre- ciation and income-tax which are regularly deducted from it, but also for National Defence Contri- bition and a special provision "of £25,000 for staff who are too old for membersnip of the contributary pensions scheme. It should be re- membered also that the company. as a holding company with invest- ments in tea and rubber companies, naturally reflects the improvement in those industries with a greater time lag than the producing com- panies themselves.
Under the articles of association the Deferred stockholders, have the right to apply at par for additional Deferred stock up to half the addi- tional dividend in excess of 10 p.e. That right will naturally be exer- cloed, since the Deferred stock stands at £6 12s 6d, and will re- quire the
£31,080 allotment of additional stock. This will leave £24,525 of the authorised ony amount of £500.000 unissued. But the directors have decided against of the authorised only £24,525 amount. At the present rate of dividends the option will be more than used up in the coming year.

Egyptian Visitors At Halton
APPRENTICES"
EDUCATION
The new interest of Egypt in her own defence plans and in those measures take under the recent treaty by Great Britain for the de- fence of British interests in the Eastern Mediterranean lent special significance to the visits paid re- cently by the party of Egyptian editors, now in England, to two stations of the Royal Air Force. One was a typical nighter station, at which some of the lastest bom- bera had been assembled for the benent of the visitors; the other was the establishment at which engine and aeroplane parts are all included in the continuing educa. tion of young men who have most- ly reached the standard of the
