Strathroy Dead-Heats

Thrills For Punters At

The Race Course

Fine Win By Coronation Day: Mr. S. W. Tang Qualifies

an

Although there was only one big dividend, the opening day of the Eighth Extra Race Meeting at Happy Valley yesterday was unqualified success and the fact that most of the races were extre- mely closely fought out affairs, especially in the Canberra Handicap when the favourite, Strathroy, was held to a dead-heat by Gypsy Love and in the October Handicap when Wild Life just beat King's Warden, by a head, spoke volumes for the handicapping.

Mr. S. W. Tang qualified to have his name in black letters when he scored his tenth win by bringing home Coronation Day to pay the handsome dividend of $128.50 in the Jordan Handicap while the Dally Double (Dawn Star and Coronation Day) paid the successful punters 361.90 for their modest 85 bet.

The crowd was quite a large one considering the many other counter-attractions and as a result the cash sweeps were well supported. The most successful jockey of the day was Mr. Donald Black with two wins, two seconds and a third but honourg amongst owners, was evently distributed, no stable scoring more than one first.

CARNARVON HANDICAP'

Vira Mr. K. S. Shu) went off to aying start in the Carnarvon Handicap but it was evident even

In the very early stages of the rage that it would not be able to last 'the pace.

King's Coronation (Mr. B. A Proulx was made favourite and It fully

ran up to expectations. -Scenic - View (Mr. N. Deitz) was second and Centre Forward (Mr. Y. T. Fung third. Vira had faded out of the pleture at the Village Bend.

Mr. Donald Black scored one of his characteristic wins when he Lambert Dunbar's brought Wild Life in first in the October Handicap to beat King's Warden (Mr. N. Deitz) by'a head. Oladia- tor (Mr. W. C. Poy), was third.

The race provided race fans with a very fine finish, and though at one time in looked as if Wild Life would not be able to come in. Mr.

Black steered his mount through an opening in the middle of the field to steal the race from the favourite...

NATHAN HANDICAP Mr. Ip Kul Ying scored his second win of the day when he rode Dawn Star in to win the Nathan Handi- cap to justify the confidence placed in him by the punters who made him a hot favourite.

Dawn Star led all the way, close- ly followed by Red Feather, Havoc Eve and Rose Queen and it was not until the Village Bend was

the field-Rose Queen moving up reached that a change came over

to pass Havoc Eve and Red Feather -the latter running into third place.
