London, Oct. 0. With sentiment already nervousį following recent indications of the slowing down of the American in- dustrial activity, last night's re- newed break on Wall Street ad- ministered a sharp blow to the United Kingdom stock and com modity marketa "to-day.

The weakness was most apparent among the latter where rubber de- clined a half-penny from the Gov- ernment level to 71 pence, which Ls the lowest level since October, 1936, encountering heavy stale bull liquidation together with bear sell ing which in turn uncovered num- erous stop loss orders.

Base metals also met heavy liqui- dation especially tin and copper on the fact of which buyers were overwhelmed while all other major commodities joined in the down- ward

movement. In the case of the stock exchange, however, the decline reflects the precautionary attitude of the jobbers rather than the actual selling and in some instances, notably among minings, the lower levels are now attracting the attention of bargain hunters. Reuter.

VATICAN IGNORES DUCE'S BERLIN

VISIT

"Berlin. Oct. 8.

the

A message from Rome to "Der Angriff." draws attention to the fact that the official Vatican paper "Osservatore Romano" gave remarkably little space to report- ing Mussolini's visit to Germany.

Commenting on this editorial Omission, the "Angriff" suggests that the visit rather upset Papal authorities, as it was apparently i not in line with the policy favour- ed by the Vatican, which fears

that

this strengthening of the "Rome-Berlin Axis" might exclude the possibility of bringing about a restoration of the "Stresa Front." The paper concludes:

"We take note of this reticence. and regard it as further evidence of the Vatican's political animosity to Germany. That this reticence is not to be explained by the Papai newspapers political principles is proved by the profuse accounts it gave on the visit of M. Laval, then in January
