Pelping. Oct. 8.

After a brief action Japanese troops routed the Chinese irre- gular forces from near the hills to the west of Pelping forcing them to take refuge in the mountains where pursuit is continuing. All available Japanese troops in Pel- ping, estimated at nearly 10,000, with tanks and artillery are partak- ing in the operation which began yesterday morning.

Advancing in a wide semi-circle through valleys and ravines, the Japanese encountered fre from machine-guns and trench mortars. but the resistance of the Chinese consisting of remnants of defeated Goldlery, professional bandits and a sprinkling of students totalling about 2.000, was scattered.

JAPANESE DRIVE INTO SHANSI SMASHED

Talyuan. October 6. Dealing a smashing blow to the Japanese drive into Shansi province, the forces of the 8th Route Army under Generals Chu Teh and Peng Teng-but captured a number of strategic towns in the northern section of the pro- vince on October 4, according to official reports received here.
