His Lordship called upon me to ascertain to what extent of co-operation I was willing to give him for accomplishing the object he had much at heart. I informed him that Her Majesty's Proclamations appointing the 22 March to be observed in England and Ireland as a day of fasting and humiliation did not appear to me to warrant a Proclamation in the Colony in the mouth of June, but that if His Lordship could point out any precedent for a compliance with his wishes, I could give the matter the most attentive consideration. His Lordship could not refer to any, and I objected to closing the public offices - but I stated that if he carried into effect his intention of having a Cathedral service - I should certainly not object to anyone who liked to attend.
