Manchester Cancer Committee, to AUSTRO-GERMAN produce a minerai lubricating oil "up to Dr. Twort's specification."

Except to those familiar with the progress of cancer research, or who have followed the course of "The Manchester Experiment," the state- ment conveys little or nothing, but to thousands of men and women working in certain industries up and down the country it may well be a message of hope.

TRADE RETURNS

Vienna, Sept. 25. Trade between Germany and Austria increased considerably in the first six months of the present

A few years ago Dr. C. C. Twort, with the resources of the Manches- ter Research Unit at his command,

evolved a specification for all prac-

tically free from cancer-producing properties.

"DANGEROUS SUBSTANCES” The Departmental Committee on Cancer, in its report in 1831, stated

that mineral and shale olis were

recognised as capable of inducing cancer of the skin in those exposed to their action over long periods. Some workers in occupations in- volving contact with these sub- stances are exposed to this risk.

The dangerous substances are tar and certain coal and oil pro- ducts, and what the Committee describe as the "small proportion" of workers likely to be affected amounts to many

thousands of those admitted every year to the cancer hospitals and

material.

At Jalls West a shaft has beer sunk to 30 feet and crosscutting started.
