CRIME OVER LONDON

#

Kwangtung Capital Has Hectic Day

Canton, Sept. 22.

What is possibly the longest air raid in the present Sino- Japanese hostilities was experienced last night when, an un- known number of Japanese' planes paid Canton the third visit In 24 hours. It is estimated they dropped from between 15 to 30 bombs, mostly on the northern and eastern areas.

The loss of life and damage to property is not divulged of- fletally but foreign observers give it as their opinion that this 'is more severe than in the two earlier ralds.

The alarm was sounded shortly after 2 am and an hour later the thunder of bombs "and anti-aircraft fire was audible, with an occasional lull, til nearly daylight. It is now f am, and the drone of the last plane has only just faded away, while the "all clear" signal" has still to be sounded.

Reuter's representative apenti the night on the roof of the Vic- torla Hotel and witnessed the burst of flames as each bomb was dropped. followed a second later by the sound of its explosion. Tracer anti-aircraft shells were clearly visible with the shells rocketing acrosa the sky before bursting. Chinese planes are un- derstood to have engaged the raiders and machine-gun fire was distinctly audible at times.

PLANES OFF MACAO. Reuter learned from a reliable' source that seven planes were sighted in Lungshankang, north of Macao, at 2.30 a.m.. flying in a northerly direction via the Boeta Tigris Forts. They were sighted over Canton at 3.10 a.m. but even- tually departed, being chased as far as Chekal, west of Macao, by Chinese planes.

In the second raid 27 Japanese bombers are reported to have taken part, arriving in the city at 7.10 am. and leaving at 7.30 a.m.

During both raids number of bombs were dropped on the east- ern, northern and western suburbs and also on the aerodromes where, however, no special damage was done.

Two bombs were dropped almost outside the front door of the palatial Sun Yat Sen Memorial Hall which thousands of foreign-
