TURNING POINT IN

SPAIN?

POSSIBLE EFFECTS ON "NEXT

GREAT WAR"

The present outbreak of 'civil war, endemic in Spain for the. last century or so, is said to be reaching a turning-point. This vagus phrase is used by both parties, as it has the effect, if not repeated too often, of encouraging troops to “carry on." We shall probably hear of other turning-points until either the effect of the phrase wears thin or the war itself reaches its inconclusive end by sheer exhaustion on both sides.

As some cynic said: "This is a real war because each side claims to be victorious in every encounter." The accounts of actions, gains, and losses have the beginning been more froin unreliable than usual in war, and so also have been the accounts of the performance by modern weaporis.

In the first instance the number of tanks, armoured cars,' bombers, &c.. taking part on elther side has surely been much exaggerated.
