PARACHUTE
DEATH 100
YEARS AGO
Jury And “Suicidal Machine"
The "Lancet" of a hundred years ago published this report of an Inquest under the heading "Death by Falling from the Clouds";
"The following is an account of the post-mortem examination of the body of Mr. Robert Cocking, aged 61; who fell with a suicidal" machine called a parachute. from the cord of a balloon which as- cended from Vauxhall-gardens, on the 24th July, 1837.
"The height which the balloon had reached when the parachute commenced its descent is stated to have been 5,000 feet.
"The Instrument of death was simply a canvas toy, constructed in ignorance, and used with the hardihood which might distinguish an unfortunate being who con- templated his own destruction by extraordinary" and wonder-exciting means an end which, without the motive, was more effectually at- tained by the crushing of the parachute in the air as it dropped.
"The jury returned a verdict to this effect: "We and that the deceased, Robert Cocking, came to his death casually and by misfor- tune in consequence of severe in juries received by a fall out of a parachute of his own invention and contrivance which had been ap pended to a balloon; and we fur- ther and that the parachute did move to his death, and, therefore. that such parachute ought to be- come a deodand, and forfeited to the Queen."

gers. Britain's latest liner. the 23,- 500 tons Orcades, of the Orient Line, left Southampton. recently on her maiden voyage-a cruise to the Mediterranean and Adriatic.
Within a few hours of arriving on board, travellers learned that her name is pronounced with the second syllable short, as in "Cing- alese" that she claims to be the frat British ship trading on the Suez route to possess a public sit- ting-room equipped with condit- loned air; and that. despite her size and luxury, no attempt has been made to disguise her "ship- piness."
SWEEPING SUN-DECKS With her great, sweeping sun decks, alry public rooms and open- air swimming baths, the liner has been designed, dis have all the vessels of the Orient Line, to provide coolness even in the Red Sea hot season. In wintry weather, unwel- come draughts are deflected by a metal. streamlined fin, placed at the head of the decks, which shoots the wind upwards and outwards.
Public rooms, as the company claims. although luxurious, "have. been shorn of unneeded extra- vagance." while for those who like it there is a "tavern", with darts and shove-ha'penny boards. Many cabins, and the two "flats," or suites of rooms, are air-condition- ed, and most have windows instead of port holes.
Orcades makes her frst voyage to, Australa on October 9.

BRITAIN TO LEAD IN LOCOMOTIVE
TESTING
STATION TO BE BUILT AT RUGBY
Britain is soon to have the most up-to-date locomotive testing sta- tion in the world.
The London Midland and Scot- tish, and the London and North Eastern railways are combining for this enterprise, which should have far-reaching effects on the dealgn of British locomotives.
A site has been chosen at Rugby, and at least £120,000 will be spent on building and equipping the station with plant to carry out teats of every possible kind. A roller bench on which engines may be
driven at 'speeds up to 120 miles an hour, while remaining station- ary, will be a special feature.
In the past, the largest testing station in this country has peen that of the Great Western Railway at Swindon. This cannot be used
for testing engines of more than '500 hores" power, or at speeds" of " more than 80 miles an hour.
AIDING EXPORT TRADE Experts have blamed the lack of a station such as those possessed by France, Germany, and America for the fall in our export trade in
