It is officially announced to-day that the Chinese have given up Kuan, strategic town in southern Hopel province, following a terrific attack by the Japanese artillery last night.

Footing, Sept. 18. Driving southward from Kuan. 2,000 Japanese launched a fierce attack on the Chinese lines at Yungching, Puchiawu and Esleh. chiawu, but were routed with heavy casualties.

It is estimated that more than 1,000 Japanese men were killed during the encounter.

The Chinese flanking movement surrounded the Japanese as they moved into the Yungching. sector and the Chinese machine-gunned the attackers from four sides. The remaining Japanese fled north- ward in great confusion. Central News.
