British Tanker Stopped By
Unknown Submarine
Istanbul September 8: The Socony-Vacuum Oll Co. state that the British tanker Pegasus en route to Alexandria was stopped by all unknown submarine in the neighbourhood of Rhodes. The vessel was challenged but was allowed to proceed. The British authorities have wirelessed the Pegasus asking for particulars-Reuter.
The submarine which flew Spanish Insurgent colours came up. The Pegasus inspected the craft which dived quickly-Reuter.
TORPEDO FIRED AT SHIP
A Transoccan News Service message from Gibraltar states that a second vessel, Harpa (3,000 tons), which, according to despatches trom Tunis, was bound from Port Said to La Gouletie, was stopped by a warship whose name and nationality have not been established. The warship fired a torpedo but fortunately it went wide of its mark.

A big naval battle in the Mediterranean is reported in which the Insurgent cruiser Canarius is fighting Spanish Government destroyers off Algeria. Another report says that two Spanish steamers were attacked in the vicinity of Algiers by Insurgents. They ran aground in haste to escape from the enemy. The Chinese officially announce that at least 300 Chinese were killed and 400 injured when
a Japanese plane bombed a crowded special refugee-laden train from Shanghai as it was entering the Sungklang Station, on the Shanghai-Hangchow Ballway line, All Ave coaches, comprising the train. were destroyed and the station was badly damaged.
The Chinese also announce that one British, one -French and one German houseboat were bomb- ed and sunk at Minghong a few miles up-river from Shanghai-Reuter.
It transpires that the refugees' train was standing by the platform of the Sungkiang Station waiting for the right of way to go on to Hangchow from Shanghal when the attack occurred. Injured children moaned pitiously while survivors were searching frantically for missing relatives and friends. Shanghai, Sept. 8: Using army tanks for the first time, the Japanese claim to have driven out Chinese troops from the Far Eastern race course, a couple of hundred yards from an outpost éstab- lished by the Japanese on the Shanghai-Woosung Road at the beginning of the hostilities last month. The Japanese assert that they" blasted their way through concrete machine gun emplacements and pill boxes in the face of heavy fire.
